AmpHer

November 2018

I was connected with AmpHer (now called VOICE) through Catchafire, a platform that connects nonprofits with professionals for skills-based projects. VOICE is an organization “working to end violence against women and girls in conflict, crisis, and disaster settings around the world”. The founder had a pitch deck in progress but she needed help with the design and content in a short amount of time before her funders meeting. I couldn’t have been happier using my skills to help support an important mission.

Type: Presentation (pitch deck)

Tools: PowerPoint

 The Process

We discussed the prep work needed to help me better understand her vision and to collect the necessary materials. The founder sent me the presentation she had worked on so far along with other background materials like the mission statement, programming, and key data. We also discussed specific elements she wanted to include in the presentation such as data, graphics, images, or key brand messaging.

Then we brainstormed the big picture together. The founder and I discussed the goals, audience, and length of her presentation. This presentation was essentially a pitch deck to funders and foundations with the goal of major gifts fundraising.

Finally, it was time for the design process including feedback loops and iterations of the presentation. I took her supporting materials and her goals in mind to create a first draft of the presentation. I completely redesigned her deck using her nonprofit’s brand kit, included more content, and created more data visualizations since her initial presentation was word-heavy. She was blown away by the results! We had a couple more feedback sessions where we fine-tuned her presentation to include more content and to add some animation. I also helped create two versions of the deck: one for presenting to funders that included the animations, a second for sharing with the general public without animations.

 What I Learned

I learned how to communicate, listen, and collaborate with a founder in a completely different sector for the first time! This experience helped me to better understand how to ask for business needs and how to incorporate others’ design feedback. I truly enjoyed redesigning this presentation deck because it was so word-heavy and I knew it would be incredibly beneficial to redesign visual elements and create data visualizations. It also felt so good to help a nonprofit like hers save nearly $3,000 so that she was ready to fundraise for an important mission!
